Voices from Our Community

SP

Somwang Phongsuwan

Son of resident — Bangkok, Thailand

My mother has been at Baan Sabai for over two years now. The difference from where she was before is difficult to put into words — she rings me voluntarily these days, which she never did before. She tells me about the garden, about the cooking class she joined, about the staff member who remembered her favourite soup.

Margaret R.

Resident (3 years) — originally from Melbourne, Australia

I moved to Chiang Mai after my husband passed, looking for somewhere I could genuinely feel settled. The Premium Suite has given me exactly that — my own balcony, my own routine, and a team who actually listen when I mention my preferences. The fresh flowers every week are a small thing, but it tells you something about the place.

Nattawee Khamsom

Daughter of resident — Chiang Mai, Thailand

We were hesitant about placing our father somewhere when he could no longer fully manage alone. Baan Sabai was the first place that felt less like a care facility and more like a neighbourhood. The staff introduced themselves by name on our first visit. That small thing made us feel this was the right decision. A year on, he has friends here.

David H.

Resident (18 months) — originally from Vancouver, Canada

What I appreciate most is that no one here makes me feel like I need minding. I join the market outings when I feel like it, I help in the garden some mornings, and on the days I want to just sit with a book, that is entirely fine too. The meals are genuinely good — not institution food, actual cooking.

Amara Thanakit

Niece of resident — Lampang, Thailand

Communication from the team is something I genuinely did not expect to be this good. They send updates without being asked, they reply quickly, and they remember what matters to each family member. My aunt was reluctant to move initially — she now tells me she wishes she had done it earlier.

Resident (5 months) — originally from London, UK

Still relatively new here, but I can say the adjustment was far easier than I anticipated. The team went out of their way to help me settle in without making it feel like onboarding. The garden is genuinely beautiful in the mornings. A few things I have requested — dietary things, mostly — have been accommodated without any fuss.

Stories Worth Sharing

Finding Community After Decades Abroad

The Situation

A retired academic from the UK, 78, had spent thirty years between Europe and Southeast Asia. Following health complications, solo living had become genuinely difficult. Her daughter in Bangkok began looking for residential options in Chiang Mai that would suit her independent personality.

What Changed

After moving into the Active Lifestyle arrangement at Baan Sabai, she joined the weekly creative writing group that residents had organically formed. Within two months, she was attending morning movement sessions, had begun teaching an informal English conversation gathering for staff interested in practice, and had established close friendships with three other residents.

The Outcome

Eighteen months on, she describes Baan Sabai as the most engaged community she has lived in since her university years. Her daughter visits monthly from Bangkok and says the visits now feel like catching up with someone fully alive in their life rather than someone being looked after.

"I did not move here to be cared for — I moved here to have good company and a garden. Fortunately, it turned out to have both."

A Smooth Transition for a Family With Concerns

The Situation

A Thai family from Chiang Rai needed residential care for an 82-year-old grandfather who had specific dietary restrictions, a strong preference for Thai routines, and reservations about moving away from his home province. The family had visited several facilities before arriving at Baan Sabai.

How We Helped

The Baan Sabai team spent two sessions with the grandfather and his family before any decision was made — walking the grounds, sharing a meal, meeting current residents. Dietary documentation was prepared in advance, and a staff member with northern Thai dialect experience was introduced as his primary contact for the first months.

One Year Later

His family now visits fortnightly from Chiang Rai — a journey they say feels worth making because of how clearly he has settled. He tends a section of the vegetable garden, eats well, and has become one of the more vocal participants in the storytelling evenings that run weekly.

"He kept saying he would be lonely. He now tells us he is too busy to feel lonely. We did not expect that."

— His granddaughter, February 2026
